After yesterday’s qualifying it looked like Toyota was up for their first win of their F1 career. It looked like Brawn GP has lost its thunder. But today the Gods of Horsepower have once again smiled to Jenson Button and his Brawn GP, gave a pet on the back to Sebastian Vettel and his Red Bull Racing and just left the dessert for Jarno Trullin and his Toyota.
Overall an uneventful race in the extreme heat of the desert. Only one retirement from Williams’ Kazuki Nakajima. Who would expect this in these conditions? But apparently the engineers back in the teams’ factories are just doing a great job to encounter all the elements.
Lewis Hamilton and his McLaren seem to be on top of their game, not the F1 game yet, but it is progress. His magical button, more widely known as KERS, helped him acquire briefly second place right at the start of the race. Of course Trulli just took it back. At a stage McLaren was lurking for third place on the podium, but that never happened.
Finally Ferrari wakes up! The desert fired up the Iceman. Kimi Raikkonen managed to finish sixth, collecting the first 3 points of the season for Scuderia and himself. At a point of the race he was even leading. These were the first laps of the season that on of the top contenders of last year were leading a race. Good job Kimi, but still the path ahead is long and tough. The reigning king of the desert, Fellipe Massa, well he is not the king anymore. An incident on the opening lap led him to the pits to change the car nose, and after that he only managed to finish 14th. Hence he looses the Bahrain crown.
The race was uneventful. Tires played a very important role. The hard compound was not forgiving at all. Timo Glock and his Toyota learned that the hard way as from the lead they ended up only 7th. Button secured the lead after the first round of pit stops and never let it go. Rubens Barrichello opted for a three-stop strategy which did not work very well for him as he finished only 5th, but at least he brought home more points for Brawn GP, reinforcing their Constructor Championship lead.
